Students interested in pursuing research in OS and distributed systems may wish to choose a project that is more research oriented. Such a project can serve as a springboard so that you can quickly become involved with systems research here at Rutgers. However, this route is only suggested for advance students who think that they have mastered the basics! Otherwise, you will be building your castle on a foundation of sand; not a good idea. So, please be honest with yourself and only choose this option if you are extremely confident about your background in OS. You also have to make an appointment with us (instructor & TA) and convince us that you are prepared to do an independent project.
Students wishing to do an independent project can work alone or form teams of up to 2 people. During the first few weeks of class, I will fill out this page with a number of possible, suggested problems that you might attack. These are only suggestions! It's up to you to read the papers assigned for class (and perhaps some papers assigned in previous 545 classes) and form your own ideas -- this is why it's called an independent project! You are welcome to consult with us, of course, to get advice some whether you are attacking an interesting problem, when we think it's doable, and whether we have the necessary infrastructure here to support what you want to work on.
A somewhat similar system is MACEDON.
